What happens in a counselling/therapy session?

It starts with building rapport with the client and then tapping into multiple problems which are then discussed using various therapies. The aim is to resolve and get resolution on deep seated issues/ thought patterns by bringing awareness to them. The therapist/ counsellor is a mere facilitator, who helps you navigate difficult situations and leads you to healing.

How can I find the right therapist?

There are varied kinds of therapists and sometimes it can get overwhelming. The best way to move forward is either by reference from a friend/colleague or by picking a therapist by their mode of therapy(art therapy, dance movement therapy, REBT etc). Although, finding a right therapist can be something like finding the right pair of undergarments – you have to test it out to know and in testing lies your first step to growth.

Are therapists supposed to make me feel good?

They’re supposed to leave you after each session in a more regulated way wherein, you feel equipped enough to handle situations at hand and yourself until your next appointment.

Who should go for counselLing / therapy?

Everybody. Counselling is an unbiased , encouraging, empathetic and honest way of getting a new perspective on your daily living issues. And we all deserve that. However, a person who feels he is unable to progress and is bogged down by certain issues, should go in for a counselling/ therapy session .

How many therapy/ counselling sessions are enough for me?

It varies from person to person. Therapeutic healing takes time to show results. But it’s ideal to have a minimum of 2 sessions with a therapist to understand if you feel comfortable with them to share your issues.

How long is a session?

A single session usually lasts between 30- 60mins. Where in you and the therapist delve deep into your concerns in a safe space uninterrupted.

I'm not sure I can open up..

Nobody is and it’s only natural to feel unsure about opening up to a complete stranger about your deeper issues . However, it’s the therapist’s job to make you comfortable enough to open up while you enter with an open mind.

I'm scared I'll be judged, plus the therapist is a stranger ..

It’s reasonable to feel this way. Although a therapist is trained to not judge, advice or solve your problems but to help and equip you to navigate your issues with empathy, unconditional positive regard and respect .

Is there a promise of confidentiality ?

That’s the first rule of therapy. Everything you speak to them is kept confidential unless you are prone to put yourself and others in danger. In such a case the therapist takes your permission to involve family and keep people in the loop.

When can I notice the results of the therapy ?

Changes happen very organically and depend from person to person. If the issues are deep rooted, it might take months as compared to issues that are less ingrained. It also depends on your own determination to heal.

Why does therapy feel so difficult?

It’s a courageous act to see ourselves for who we are and accept sides that we’d rather never even acknowledge. The process of healing requires us to deep dive and reconnect with our true self which sometimes alters our perceptions about the situations , people and us. Hence, change is often uncomfortable.
